Volunteers honored by the American Dental Association.

In August, the ADA Committee on International Programs and Development awarded the Certificate for International Volunteer Service to dentists and dental students who spent at least 14 days performing dental services in a foreign country. Recipients were nominated by their state or local dental society, federal dental services or dental school. A total of 171 ADA member volunteers were honored.

A Study done on Antiboitic Prophylaxis shows that patients who are undergoing invasive dental procedures do not benefit from it use.

In the British Medical Journal it suggested that patients that are at risk from infective endocarditis (an infection of the inner surface of the heart) will not benefit from antibiotic prophylaxis before undergoing invasive dental procedures.

American Dental Association profile live on Sharecare website

The American Dental Association is now live on Sharecare.com and providing the public with answers to their oral health questions.
The ADA has its own page on Sharecare’s website, which was co-created by Mehmet Oz, M.D., a physician who first began fielding questions on “The Oprah Show” and now hosts “The Dr. Oz Show,” and Jeff Arnold, founder of WebMD. The page shows the recent activity of the ADA, which includes answering questions such as “Why do I need to floss my teeth?” and “How can plaque make my gums red and tender?” and “What are the signs of oral cancer?” among others.

Pediatric groups are issuing early childhood caries recommendations

In a new joint policy statement published in the June issue of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Paediatric Society offer recommendations for preventing early childhood caries in indigenous children in the U.S. and Canada.

A Dental student outreach is eyed

A growing apprehension over patient safety in dental outreach programs has led the ADA to distribute a new policy on student participation.
Approved by the House of Delegates in Resolution 31H-2010, the policy aims to bolster the safety of patients taking part in outreach programs by reminding students to follow ethics codes, licensed dentists to supervise students, and students to do only what they have been educated and trained to do.

Report available for comments on Electronic dental lab prescriptions

The ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics has approved for circulation and comment Proposed ADA Technical Report No. 1054 for Electronic Dental Laboratory Prescriptions. The report presents the types of data and electronic format necessary to be included on an electronic dental laboratory prescription. The goal of the report is to address the need for electronic transmission of patient information from the dentist to the laboratory with the necessary security and interoperability.

FDA says that Cigarette ads, packages must include oral cancer warnings

Washington—The Food and Drug Administration will require use of a “cancerous lesion on lip” image in cigarette advertising and packaging for its potential to motivate positive behavioral change, influence youth and young adults in particular and inform the public that cigarettes cause oral cancer.

Energy drinks should not be consume by AAP Kids

Dentists routinely caution patients about the over-consumption of soda pop, juice and sports drinks that pack little if any nutritional value and take a toll on teeth.
Now the American Academy of Pediatrics is taking aim at energy and sports drinks, saying that in most cases, kids don’t need them and some products contain substances that can be harmful to children.

Dietary guidelines are Updated by the USDA

Washington—Consumers should forgo sugary drinks and make water their beverage of choice, according to the new dietary guidelines released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The guidelines and a new icon for healthy eating—a colorful plate that gives consumers an easy visual example of how to dish up proper portions for breakfast, lunch and dinner—were unveiled June 2 by First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Free dental care day is hosted by Vermont Dentists

May 21 was a day for people who sometimes fall through the cracks. They make too much money to qualify for state or federal assistance but still face economic hardships and have no dental insurance. So many have to go without access to oral care.
