Online Dental Insurance, Dental Implant for Missing Tooth

Sunday, Nov. 6th 2016 10:23 AM

A dental implant may be the best way to go when replacing a tooth. However, just like partial and bridges dental implants have a few cons to them as well.

* Cost: One of the larger cons about dental implants is the price.  Cost of dental implants will very greatly for one tooth it can range around $1000 – $5000 and up.  If you need bone grafting that too will only increase the cost of having and implant as well.

* Dental Insurance:  Unlike partials and bridges, most dental insurance plans will not cover for dental implants, bone grafts, sinus lifts, etc. The few that do may only cover for part of the procedure such as the crown or abutment. (therefore if you have dental insurance you will want to check with your policy  to confirm if you have any benefits for the cost of having implant work done.

* Surgery: Another disadvantage of dental implants is that it requires a surgery.  The implant has to be placed into your bone.  Surgery is not without risks.  Some of these risks include, infection, prolonged bleeding, damage to other teeth, nerve damage, delayed bone healing, jaw fracture and many others.

* Bone Loss:  Some light bone loss over many years is normal.  If you lose too much bone, you may have to replace the whole implant.

* Time: A common disadvantage for dental implants is that they take time.  Although in some cases your implant dentist may be able replace many teeth, with same day, the majority take three to four months to complete the implant process.  This is because bone just heals slowly.  If you need bone grafting, treatment time can extend from three months to 18 months or more depending on your unique situation.

A benefit is that dental implants look and feel just like teeth, and just like teeth they are meant to last a life time.  However if you do not take proper care of your implants and see a dentist regularly or if you smoke you run the risk of losing the implant just like you would your real teeth.

Make sure if you are thinking about having dental implants. That you see a dentist that is an implant specialist and is highly qualified in the field. Remember you get what you pay for, make sure you are investing your money in a dentist that can do the job and do it right.
