Treatment of Periodontal Disease

Monday, Nov. 14th 2016 6:55 AM

In a prior post we talked about what Periodontal (gum) disease is and how it can quickly turn bad if left untreated. However there is a bright side. Caring for gum disease is surprisingly simple depending on the severity level of the tooth, gums, and bone.

Early stages are the red swollen gums that bleed when flossing or brushing. This stage is called Gingivitis. A professional cleaning along with excellent Oral Hygiene Care at home, flossing and brushing twice a day, will completely reverse the disease. Which is why it so important to see a dentist regularly so they can spot dental issues in the early stages and treat them right away before larger dental care services are needed.

Other stage of the disease is redder gums that also bleed, minimal calculus has built up on the tooth near the gum line, and periodontal pockets measurement of four or more. A periodontal pocket is the area between the tooth and gum that the dentist or hygienist measure to see how much bone has been lost. Some people will lose a good portion of the bone and might even have to have some teeth extracted.

Don’t let it get to this point.  See your dentist twice a year. And remember a good dental insurance plan will cover normally up to 100 percent your twice a year check ups cleaning’s and basic x-rays.

Online Dental Insurance, Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Thursday, Nov. 10th 2016 6:46 AM

What is Periodontal Disease?  Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria (plaque) left behind by food that affects the tissue (gum) that surrounds and support your teeth.  Plaque, the white/yellowish sticky film that covers your teeth. Over time this plaque hardens into calculus also called tartar, which is only removed by the dentist or hygienist.

It is important to understand bacteria can still be forming under the calculus because toothbrush cannot keep below the gums clean.  As a result, the bacteria are infecting your gums. Your body is trying to fight off this harmful infection, but if the plaque is not removed by a dental professional it is a losing battle. If this condition continues to go untreated you will start to lose bone that hold your teeth in place. So what happens when there is few or no bone to hold a tooth in place? It can fall out.

Online Dental Insurance, Dental Implant for Missing Tooth

Sunday, Nov. 6th 2016 10:23 AM

A dental implant may be the best way to go when replacing a tooth. However, just like partial and bridges dental implants have a few cons to them as well.

* Cost: One of the larger cons about dental implants is the price.  Cost of dental implants will very greatly for one tooth it can range around $1000 – $5000 and up.  If you need bone grafting that too will only increase the cost of having and implant as well.

* Dental Insurance:  Unlike partials and bridges, most dental insurance plans will not cover for dental implants, bone grafts, sinus lifts, etc. The few that do may only cover for part of the procedure such as the crown or abutment. (therefore if you have dental insurance you will want to check with your policy  to confirm if you have any benefits for the cost of having implant work done.

* Surgery: Another disadvantage of dental implants is that it requires a surgery.  The implant has to be placed into your bone.  Surgery is not without risks.  Some of these risks include, infection, prolonged bleeding, damage to other teeth, nerve damage, delayed bone healing, jaw fracture and many others.

* Bone Loss:  Some light bone loss over many years is normal.  If you lose too much bone, you may have to replace the whole implant.

* Time: A common disadvantage for dental implants is that they take time.  Although in some cases your implant dentist may be able replace many teeth, with same day, the majority take three to four months to complete the implant process.  This is because bone just heals slowly.  If you need bone grafting, treatment time can extend from three months to 18 months or more depending on your unique situation.

A benefit is that dental implants look and feel just like teeth, and just like teeth they are meant to last a life time.  However if you do not take proper care of your implants and see a dentist regularly or if you smoke you run the risk of losing the implant just like you would your real teeth.

Make sure if you are thinking about having dental implants. That you see a dentist that is an implant specialist and is highly qualified in the field. Remember you get what you pay for, make sure you are investing your money in a dentist that can do the job and do it right.

Online Dental Insurance, Cobra Dental Benefits

Friday, Nov. 4th 2016 6:26 AM

Under COBRA, as a former employee no longer receiving benefits, you will usually pay the entire premium amount, that is, the portion of the premium that you paid as an active employee and the amount of the contribution made by your employer.

In 1986, The Consolidation Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) was made into a law giving employees the chance to enjoy their company-sponsored health benefits even after they have severed ties with that company.  Also we only need to notify employees who have been laid off who elected to enroll in our benefits program, employees who did not elect are not eligible to be covered now correct.  The benefits offered under COBRA should be the same as the coverage the current employees have, and usually the same as the coverage the employee had prior to COBRA.  Helping to plan and administer health, life, dental and other benefits for both groups and individuals.

Teaching Your Kids To Brush Their Teeth

Friday, Nov. 4th 2016 6:01 AM

An important part of being a parent is that we never stop teaching out kids. Just one of the things we do teach them is how to take care of their teeth. When it comes to teaching your child how to brush their teeth you want to teach them by example.

Start an everyday habit with your child or children when they are just infants. Yes even if your infant has not teeth.  You can simple take a slightly damp wash cloth and gently rub their gums every night at bath time and every morning after breakfast.  This will help not only to keep their gums healthy but get them use to doing this and will make brushing their teeth then they come in easier.

Once teeth start coming out you can then start to introduce them to a soft baby tooth brush. When they become older enough to hold their toothbrush you can let them take over for them themselves with your supervision. The process of teaching your child how to brush also help them to learn responsibility which is an added bonus.

Online Dental Insurance, Dental Bridge for a Missing Tooth/Teeth

Wednesday, Nov. 2nd 2016 6:24 AM

When one loses a tooth or teeth,  another options for replacement is a dental bridge. Dental bridges are also a lower cost option when compared to a dental implant and most dental insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost of bridges.

However it is important to understand the down side to dental bridges. When getting a dental bridge you in fact have to file healthy teeth down to place a three or more connected bridge just to have on tooth back. By doing this bone loss can happen, and plaque build-up is common below the margins of the crowns, The neighboring teeth also now lacks adequate tooth structure, which makes them weaker and more susceptible to tooth decay.

A Dental Bridge can last up to 15 years with good oral hygiene habits and with regular check ups.  However it is not unusual for the life span to be much shorter if they are not properly taken care of.

When thinking about getting a dental bridge talk to your dentist and make sure this is the best option that fix your own dental care needs.

Wednesday, Oct. 26th 2016 8:45 AM

Cost of Dental Fillings

The cost of dental fillings depends on a variety of factors, including: The dentist who performs the procedure. There are several important factors you and your dentist must consider before determining how much your dental fillings will cost based upon the Severity of Damage. Fillings cost between $50 and $300 depending where you live, and the filling material (amalgam or composite) used.

Fillings Type of Filling Dental amalgam also known as silver filling is the least expensive type of filling. Tooth-colored composite resin fillings are more pleasing to the eye but are more expensive than dental amalgam fillings. As composite resin fillings are more time consuming they are more expensive than amalgam fillings.

Although costs vary across the country and by dental office, the cost of typical metal filling ranges from approximately $75 to $145 per filling, whereas a composite resin fillings range from $150 to $200 for a single surface white composite filling. Inlays and onlays weaken the tooth structure, but do so to a much lower extent than traditional fillings.
