Dental care, how long sure a check up take

I just got your Delta Dental HMO plan. It is effective as of 10/1 and I am wanting to make a dental appointment. I wondering how long does a normal check up take? I have not been to the dentist in at least five years so I forget and I not sure. Could I get a checkup during a one hour lunch brake or should I ask for some time off from work?
