Orthodontic getting braces wanting teeth to be pulled.

Is it normal to have teeth pulled if you want to have braces? I went for one of the free consults at an orthodontic dental office my regular dentist told me about. I was told in order to really correct my teeth and bite I need to have up to two teeth pulled.
I do not like the idea of pulling out teeth. I just want my teeth to be straigh . Why should I have to have my regul dentist pull out two good teeth just to get braces put on?
