How does a DHMO Dental Insurance plan works?

I have a dental HMO plan that I got three weeks ago though my job. I like to go to the dentist. I would like to know how the HMO plan works. I do not want to get stuck with a dental billing like my friend. When she when to the dentist she had to pay for every thing and then wait for her money from the insurance company which took a little over a month. I can not afford for that to happen to me.
