Dental insurance coverage, Buying dental insurance

How does insurance work if you buy it yourself vs getting it though a job? My current employer does not offer dental insurance. In the past if I had dental insurance it was either when I was on my parents policy or one that I would get though a job.
If I buy dental insurance would it be different then what I had before? If I need over two thousand dollars worth of dental work will the dental insurance cover it? Thanks.
